White River Junction roundhouse burns
November 04, 2008
Trains Newswire: WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. - The former Central Vermont roundhouse in White River Junction was destroyed by fire Sunday, various news sources reported.
A tire company was using the roundhouse, built in 1930, and thousands of tires stored inside caused the fire to spread quickly, destroying the eight-stall building. It was one of two extant CV roundhouses; the other is in St. Albans, Vt. The buildings were constructed to house the CV's 10 2-10-4 steam locomotives, received from Alco in 1930.
White River Junction was the junction between the Central Vermont and the Boston & Maine's Connecticut River Line, and is still served by Amtrak's Vermonter service between St. Albans, New York, and Washington, D.C.
